2-ply 100% ryeland yarn washed, processed and spun by my two hands!
ryeland is lovely to work with, especially in this natural mottled grey/brown colour. with a staple length of around 8cm and a micron count of around 25-30µm, it makes a good hard-wearing yarn that could be next-to-skin-soft depending on your sensitivity. i’ve woollen spun this fibre, meaning it’s airy and bouncy, keeping you nice and warm if you choose to wear it. personally i’ve used it in some textured weaving projects and find it adds some unique visual interest.
this fibre is sourced from a local farm just 20 miles from cardiff, near cowbridge. after collecting, it’s washed in small batches of around 400g and carded with my hand carders. it then gets spun into two singles of about 50g each, before being plied together. the yarn is then finished by soaking it in water and hanging it to dry attached to a small weight to help set the spin.
nature of this product means it has a variable gauge, and doesn’t fit a conventional weight like commercially spun yarn does. it tends to average around 6 wpi, but is very textured and slubby. if you’re requiring a specific wpi, please get in touch!
